23.12.05 - MERRY CHRISTMAS
And a happy new year!
16.12.05 - DIARY (RECORDING SESSIONS)
Today we recorded Eivind Skretting on cello for the song "Three Quarters". We all felt that this song needed some string arrangements, and this indeed added a new dimension to it all. Nice work!
09.12.05 - DIARY (RECORDING SESSIONS)
The last song on the CD, "Ode to the Pianos of the Sea", wasn't happening. We had known that for a while and wondered what to do. Frode wanted to try something radical, and for once even the ever conservative Francesco wasn't against it... The acoustic guitars were discarded, and the whole middle part of the song was also discarded. The only survivors were the stick and electric upright intro, the initial part and the coda with piano, electric upright and brushed percussion. After finding a sound that would work on the Roland VG-8, Frode proceeded to record the guitar part...which doesn't sound like guitar at all! Then he recorded a new vocal.
So now we have "Ode to the Pianos" with a completely new dress, and it is so much better than it used to be! Especially when we consider the CD as a whole. It shows a side of Magic Pillows that is very important and that wasn't expressed elsewhere. And we might still use the old version on a B-side!
08.12.05 - DIARY (RECORDING SESSIONS)
Camilla laid down a new vocal on "Done with Mirrors". Again, a lot of experimenting with different approaches, before finding out that what works best is her low register. Camilla has an amazing vocal range and her low register is something we haven't used before. We'll see what happens when we edit.
06.12.05 - DIARY (RECORDING SESSIONS)
Frode felt we needed to "rough up" the song "Mystery Tango" a bit. He
thought that we should take out the acoustic guitars and put in distorted
electric guitar instead. Francesco wasn't to keen on that, but it was decided to
give it a go. The final result: the acoustic guitars remained with a different
eq and the distorted electric found it's place in the mix. This is typical for
Magic Pillows: out of different opinions and
discussion comes something new that is much better than the individual ideas!
05.12.05 - DIARY (RECORDING SESSIONS)
Editing Line's baritone saxophone proved a much harder task that Knut Olav's clarinet, but we knew that in advance. Line had improvised without a written arrangement and we had to go through dozens of takes...but she plays so beautifully that it is a pleasure to listen to. We finally comped a take and were very happy with the end result. The improvisation part after the end of the song turned out to be a lot longer than we had anticipated, but it is very, very nice. We could not leave out more that we already had.
03.12.05 - DIARY (RECORDING SESSIONS)
Editing today: we went through Knut Olav's clarinet takes and put together a clarinet line for "Night Falls at the Harbour". This was easy as he was playing from a written arrangement and we only had to find the nicest sounding parts. And there were plenty!
After that we went to work on "Venus at Twilight". We need Camilla's vocal on that song and we spent a lot of time experimenting with different vocal approaches and we might already have "the take", but we'll have to edit and see if it's all there.
27.11.05 - DIARY (RECORDING SESSIONS)
Another guest artist: Line Marie Karlstad on baritone sax. This was the
first time we worked with Line and it was a real treat: she is a wonderful
musician and added a whole new dimension to "Mystery Tango". In
fact we liked her sound and style so much that we asked her to ad lib at the end
of the song. We recorded a lot of material and it will be a difficult job
editing it, there are so many beautiful phrases that we'll have to leave out...
19.11.05 - DIARY (RECORDING SESSIONS)
Today we recorded again the wonderful Knut Olav Furuseth on clarinet. He had already played some very nice clarinet parts on "This Romantic Tide", and now we put him to work on "Night Falls at the Harbour". He brought along his classic clarinet and also a new instrument he had just acquired in Prague: a silver clarinet without the wooden cheeks. This instrument seemed to have a more brilliant, piercing tone that we thought would work well on "Night Falls".
